Breaking It Down: Tea Types, part 6 - Yerba Tea
Part 6: Yerba Tea
As you all continue your journey down the Path of the Perfect Pot of Tea, I, Master Amanzi hope to guide you with my vast knowledge of the Way of Tea.
We have already dealt with the four kinds of actual tea: white tea, green tea, oolong tea, and black tea. We have also discussed rooibos tea. This brings us to another cousin of the tea family: Yerba Tea.
Yerba tea, also called mate, is a Central American drink that is made from a type of holly plant that grows in that region. Because yerba isn’t made from tea leaves it’s not considered tea, but is prepared in the same way and is often served as an option in tea circles.
While it’s not considered as healthy as the other types of tea, yerba is still relatively good for you. Yerba has twice the amount of caffeine as black tea, though it still has less than coffee and is much gentler on the stomach. It can safely increase your energy level while improving your mood. Many people use it to help in weight loss as well.
Yerba has a mild, mature flavor that is extremely popular in Central and South America—it’s called the national drink of Argentina—and is gaining popularity rapidly in the United States. If you want a burst of energy but have a sensitive stomach, yerba is a wise choice.
We have now covered six of the seven types of tea. You are rapidly becoming a Tea Master, my young student. Next time I will complete this lesson, and you will have all the tools necessary to begin to brew the Perfect Pot of Tea.
