Flavored Teas: The American Way?
Greetings, tea lovers.
I, Earl of Grey, have taken a few moments out of my precious schedule to allow you to bask in my presence. My hot tea was too hot, and I have a moment or two before Henry pulls out the loose leaves and hands it to me. So I thought I would tell you a little bit about…yourselves.
You’ve no doubt thought as you shopped for your favorite flavored tea—“Why do I enjoy flavored tea so much?”
I have wondered that very thought. “Why do Americans prefer flavored tea?” And I think I have the solution. Heed my wisdom, for I shan’t repeat it.
You Americans have a relatively young country. From a nationalistic standpoint, you’re just teenagers — young and impetuous, thinking that you’ll live forever. That translates into your tea drinking as well. You Americans are much more adventurous and outgoing, never bothering to learn the “right way” or the “wrong way” to make (or drink) tea.
Because of this, you have no reservations in trying new tea concoctions, while someone with a bit more class (I’m talking about myself here) might object at the perversion of the tea itself. You people are open-minded, fun loving. Frankly, I find it hard to stand even being around you.
But I have to hand it to you. There are so many different varieties of tea out there, and many of them do indeed taste delicious. It’s like ice cream – there’s so much variety out there, everyone’s sure to have a favourite flavor, unique from anyone else’s.
It is said that variety is the spice of life, and speaking of spices, why not put spices in your tea? Why not enjoy a million different flavors to find something perfect just for you. If you don’t like green teas because they taste too “grassy,” put a little flavor in. Iced teas especially seem to taste better with a bit of fruit or mint. So why not?
It’s nice to know that should I ever deign to visit your young upstart of a country, you’ll no doubt have countless “fun” and “unusual” flavored teas for me to try; teas that smell amazing and are refreshing and fun to drink.
Of course, I’ll not visit your country willingly. British soil is where I want to stay. With my Plain Old Earl Grey Tea in hand. After all, it’s hard to beat a classic.
