Lighting in a bottle: Tea gives you energy!

Tea is good for you. You’ve heard this before. You’ve heard about the health benefits of organic tea, but here’s something you might not have thought about before.

Imagine—you’re tired after a long day, you’ve got some extra work to do before bed, and you’re dragging. Or your friends are going out tonight, and you’re beat. Where can you muster that energy? Surprise—tea is your answer!

You already know tea has caffeine—but I bet you didn’t know that the caffeine in tea is a very special type of caffeine, different from coffee, soft drinks, and energy drinks. Studies have shown that theanine, which is an amino acid found almost exclusively in tea, can help to bring about a relaxed yet alert state of mind. Here’s why: the caffeine found in tea is absorbed into the bloodstream at a slower rate, so it’s able to give the body increased energy levels for a longer time, without the sudden “crash” often associated with all those other caffeinated drinks. The boost tea gives you keeps you alert and increases mental awareness, and won’t fade away leaving you more tired than you were before.

If you’re looking for a bit of a pick-me-up, I recommend a black tea like Assam or Irish Breakfast. They have the most caffeine and will help get you going again. Yerba Mate is another option—it’s an herbal tea that contains “mateine,” a substance similar to caffeine.  It has a natural ability to uplift the spirit, boost energy, and improve mood without causing nervousness or jitters.

So next time you’re working on an important project, or are having a hard time getting going after a long night, try some tea. It’ll give you the perfect amount of energy!
