Nature’s Medicine: Just how Healthy is Tea?
Teato is sick–heartsick. As love passes in and out of your life, it’s natural to feel empty, lonely, and…fluish. Whenever Teato’s heart gets broken, I’m sure to get a cold. But the best news is that tea, all kinds—herbal tea, rooibos tea, black, white—can help me, and you, get back on our feet.
Tea is wonderful; we all know that. But it’s also one of the healthiest drinks out there. How healthy, you ask?
• One cup of tea has about ten times the amount of antioxidants as one helping of vegetables. That means tea is ten times healthier! That doesn’t mean it can replace vegetables. It doesn’t have any nutritional value, so you still must nourish your body. But antioxidants are a feast of goodness for your body. So have a nice cup of organic tea with your meal.
• The longer you allow your tea to steep, the more antioxidants you get. Teato recommends that you let it steep for three to five minutes to bring out its catechins. (Important note: Brewing green tea too long may cause bitterness. The recommended time for brewing a smoother cup of green tea is 3 minutes)
• The best way to get the catechins and other flavonoids (fancy words for super healthy antioxidants) in tea is to drink freshly brewed tea. Other kinds, that come in a can or a bottle, the pre-made ones, instant tea, and decaffeinated teas have a lack the true goodness of freshly brewed tea.
• There’s a certain kind of green tea that’s so overflowing with healthfulness that it’s even called “super food.” It has 70 times the antioxidants of orange juice and eight times the beta carotene of Spinach. That will help you cut down on all the vitamins you should be taking every day!
Even in our darkest hours of heartbreak and chest congestion, tea is our healthiest and most constant of companions. Be sure to to keep a freshly brewed cup by your side to cure all that ails you in mind, body, and soul.
