Tea-litist: Why is Tea Considered Elitist?

Greetings, unwashed masses. It is I, the Earl of Grey — your online tea expert, bringing you vital tea information.

As I sit here drinking my herbal tea, and two dukes vie for my attention on their land dispute, I am thinking about your upcoming election.

Just a few days ago, your John McCain’s man said this in a memo:

Only celebrities like Barack Obama go to the gym three times a day, demand ‘MET-RX chocolate roasted-peanut protein bars and bottles of a hard-to-find organic brew — Black Forest Berry Honest Tea’ and worry about the price of arugula…

I put it to you. Tea is the most popular beverage in the world. Millions upon millions of people consume tea in some form or another: iced tea, hot tea, herbal tea, oolong tea, tea bags or loose leaf tea, sweet tea or unsweetened—there are millions of ways to drink tea for millions of tea drinkers. Are they all elitists?

I assert that tea is a beverage for the common man as well as for the royal. While I invented tea (despite what that crazy Master Amanzi says), I brought it to you, the commoners, to enjoy as well. It is not an expensive drink. It tastes delicious. Most people drink it all over the world. Is it more elitist than coffee? Soda? It’s available in every store and restaurant alongside those very drinks.

I can only conclude that your McCain has little else to complain about, when the slings and arrows being thrown are that Obama enjoys tea.

I am not sure that Obama is some out of touch aristocrat with his pinky in the air just because he drinks tea. Me, however—I am an elitist. So if someone could get me some of that expensive arugula, I would very much like to sample it.
