Greetings, tea lovers.

I, Earl of Grey, have taken a few moments out of my precious schedule to allow you to bask in my presence. My hot tea was too hot, and I have a moment or two before Henry pulls out the loose leaves and hands it to me. So I thought I would tell you a little bit about…yourselves.

You’ve no doubt thought as you shopped for your favorite flavored tea—“Why do I enjoy flavored tea so much?”

I have wondered that very thought. “Why do Americans prefer flavored tea?” And I think I have the solution. Heed my wisdom, for I shan’t repeat it.

Tea-litist: Why is Tea Considered Elitist?

As I sit here drinking my herbal tea, and two dukes vie for my attention on their land dispute, I am thinking about your upcoming election.

Just a few days ago, your John McCain’s man said this in a memo:

Only celebrities like Barack Obama go to the gym three times a day, demand ‘MET-RX chocolate roasted-peanut protein bars and bottles of a hard-to-find organic brew — Black Forest Berry Honest Tea’ and worry about the price of arugula…

I put it to you. Tea is the most popular beverage in the world. Millions upon millions of people consume tea in some form or another: iced tea, hot tea, herbal tea, oolong tea, tea bags or loose leaf tea, sweet tea or unsweetened—there are millions of ways to drink tea for millions of tea drinkers. Are they all elitists?
